Habibie & Ainun 3 is a 2019 Indonesian love biography drama directed by Hanung Bramantyo and written by Ifan Ismail. This film is a continuation of Rudy Habibie (2016), the prequel of Habibie & Ainun, as well as the third film in the Habibie & Ainun series. Continuing from Rudy Habibie who tells the story of young Habibie, Habibie & Ainun 3 tells the story of young Ainun. Chelsea Islan and Reza Rahadian again starred in this film after Rudy Habibie and Jefri Nichol joined as the new cast in this series. The film was screened on December 19, 2019 in Indonesia and December 26, 2019 in Malaysia.
The film opens with memories of producer Manoj Punjabi of B. J. Habibie who died on September 11, 2019.
On May 22, 2011, Habibie went to Ainun's grave to commemorate a year of his wife's death. After the pilgrimage, Habibie, who is still grieving, is lamenting the death of his wife, while the Habibie family is preparing dinner. Habibie through Thareq wants a happy atmosphere at dinner. Habibie at the wish of his grandchildren to tell "Grandma", the nickname of Hasri Ainun Besari.
Habibie then told his wife's life journey. When Habibie (Reza Rahadian) attended Dago Christian High School, Habibie once called Ainun (Maudy Ayunda) black and dark. One day, Ainun and her friends were competing with the baseball which Habibie and his friend were watching. In that match, Ainun hurt his leg and his shoe was torn. After the match was temporarily stopped to treat Ainun, Ainun returned to compete and scored 2 points, thus defeating the opposing team who only won 1 point. While the Ainun team celebrated the victory, Ainun found Habibie not there.
When Ainun returned, he checked the mailbox and never found a letter from the University of Indonesia; Ainun plans to enroll in the Faculty of Medicine. He accidentally saw his letter in the hands of his brother for several days, so when he immediately seized it right away, he was surprised because it was declared accepted. In the evening, Ainun went to a dance party and met Habibie. Habibie said he graduated at RWTH Aachen and was funded by his mother, while saying that scholarships were more appropriate for people who were more in need.
In a flashback in 1944 in Sadeng, Gunungpati, Semarang, Central Java, some residents hid in the Besari family's home from the pursuit of the Japanese army. Ainun's mother who was a midwife arrived home to save herself. After feeling safe, Ainun's mother continued her work and Ainun expressed her desire to go with her, which was agreed upon even though it was initially rejected. They both went secretly when heavy rain and lightning struck. However, their whereabouts were almost known by Japanese soldiers crossing the area, which in the end the Japanese army was distracted by something else. They managed to reach the home of a pregnant person and the delivery process went smoothly. A few years later, after Indonesia's independence, the Besari family occupied a bigger and more decent house.
When she was a new student at UI, Ainun had been treated violently when she joined the ospek, and received unpleasant treatment from two seniors when she first attended the lecture. Two people claimed to have failed the class because they took part in the National Sports Week, but Ainun denied it. Ainun chose to sit on the floor as a form of resistance, which was followed by all the other students because the mother was a woman. The two men were expelled by the Dutch lecturer and the lecturer asked everyone to sit on the bench. Ainun lectures took place smoothly and Ainun managed to become a figure admired by many students in his faculty and others, including Ahmad from the Faculty of Law. When Ahmad found Ainun who was practicing at the hospital, Ahmad had called Ainun to the spotlight of many Law Faculty students, but Ainun chose to ignore it.
Ainun was upset, then Ahmad confronted his friend Ainun in a judo contest that Ainun disliked. His friend dismissed the complaint on gambling grounds.
When Ainun was in a slum, Ainun found a poor mother who had difficulty buying medicine to treat her three sick children. When he went to the hospital to get medicine, he was stopped by two troubled people. The two men tried to grope Ainun while taking a bag, but Ahmad paralyzed both of them. The police then secured them. Ainun continues to serve the community and get a good reception there.
A few days later, Dutch lecturers were expelled to the Netherlands on the grounds that students needed to be taught by other nation's lecturers. The announcement reaped disappointment from the students. Ainun and Ahmad on vacation to the beach.
Because of the rain, Ainun and Ahmad returned to their homes. Ainun was surprised by the presence of Professor Husodo, known as Ahmad's father. Ainun spoke for a while, then returned to the boarding house with Ahmad who was delivering. Ahmad led Ainun to the door of the room, then invited him outside the house and Ainun was surprised by the 3 violinists. Ahmad immediately proposed, which was responded to his boarding comrades who came out of their peeping.
Ahmad invited Ainun to play at the night market. Everyone was shocked by the explosion in the upward round. A child is thrown out, while his father is injured in a chair. Ainun immediately gave first aid and then took his child and father to the hospital. The doctor said the child could not be saved because of a pneumothorax and his mother called Ainun a murderer. Husodo calmed Ainun by calling humans unable to reject God's destiny.
The next day, Ainun returns to Bandung. His two friends when visiting Ainun's boarding house, found Ainun not there because he returned home. His father calmed Ainun.
When Ainun returned and participated in the dance party, Ainun, Ahmad, and someone reciprocated rhymes. When someone starts demeaning Ainun by saying rhymes with the humiliation of women, Ahmad does not accept and they fight. Ahmad finally hit someone many times.
Ahmad apologized to Ainun, but he stated that he would leave Indonesia because he was not empowered by the bad experiences he and Ainun had received.
When Ainun was going to the library, Husodo asked him to talk for a while. Husodo said Ainun and his son could solve the problem at hand. Finding Ainun in a dirty suit, Husodo asked him to use a cleaner suit.
In 1961, Ainun underwent graduation, Husodo announced Ainun as the best graduate. Someone who was very sure of this announcement was shocked, disappointed. Ainun gave a speech about the emancipation of women. Someone finally recognized Ainun as the best graduate, by clapping his hands with the other guests. One day, Habibie who had finished his education kissed Ainun, implying that Ainun is now dating Habibie.
